Breightmet is around 2 miles east of Bolton in the direction of Bury. The name Breighmet comes from the old English words breorht and mead which translate as bright meadow. Within the area of Breightmet is a Netto supermarket, Leverhulme Park and The Withins secondary school. The school’s leisure facilities are well used in the local community as is Leverhulme Park with its running track, football pitches, and walks. The Crompton family lived in Breightmet from around the 16th century. The most famous Crompton was Samuel Crompton the inventor of the cotton industry's Spinning Mule in 1799. Samuel Crompton lived at ‘Hall ith Wood’ which is now used as a museum.
Little Lever is one of the larger districts of Bolton with many shops, a library, a market and a Somerfield's supermarket. There are many schools and its secondary school is a specialist languages school. Moses Gate Country Park on the edge of Little Lever offers country walks, and events.
Little Lever takes its name from the Lever family living in the Great Lever area. Members of the Lever family were lords of Little Lever during the 13th century. During the 19th century, William Hesketh Lever was an industrialist developing the soap company Lever Brothers with his brother James, which is now part of Unilever. He was also a prominent figure in local government becoming the mayor of Bolton in 1918. He became Viscount Leverhulme in 1922, Hulme being the maiden name of his wife Elizabeth.
