Darwen is situated on the West Pennine Moors and belongs to the Borough of Blackburn, neighbouring towns are Blackburn, Bolton and Haslingden with Hoddlesden and Tockholes forming part of Darwen itself. Locals are known as Darreners. The name Darwen comes from The River Darwen which runs through the town. Originally Dwrgwyn (Old Welsh), with Dwr meaning water and Gwyn meaning white, it translates into ‘clear water’.
Roman Road which runs through Hoddlesden, was built by The Romans and is still used today. Famous industries of Darwen include Crown Paints and Wallpapers and ICI Plastics. The Darwen (Jubilee) Tower is Darwen’s prominent landmark built in 1897 to mark Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebration.
