JJs Restaurant is a small, friendly restaurant owned by Andy Thomas on Blackburn Rd, Egerton. Two of us went to dine at lunch time during the week . As we entered we were greeted by the waiter who showed us to our seats and took our coats. The chairs were comfortable and modern and the table was laid with fresh crisp cream coloured table cloths and fresh flowers. There was also a basket of fresh white bread and Melba toast.
We were handed our menus and given time to browse and choose our starters and main meals. We ordered two halves of larger. When served the larger, Krombacher, was nice and cold a tasted great. The menu had an extensive list of wines from, Europe and The New World. House wines, sparkling wines and champagnes were also available.
There were a good range of starters to chooses from including soup of the day, melon, salmon and Parma ham. I chose Stilton Mushrooms with garlic bread and my friend chose Soup of the Day which was Pea & Ham. Main meals consisted of pork medallions, lamb, chicken, beef and a Mediterranean vegetable dish for vegetarians. There was also a special board with Fillet Steak, Smoked Salmon, Roast Duckling, King Prawns and Halibut Steak. I opted for the Trout Fillet with red onion chutney and my friend went for the Stuffed Chicken.
Our starters arrived and as with all the dishes served they were nice and hot. The Pea & Ham Soup was ‘lovely’ with lots of peas and a peppery taste, just how home made Pea & Ham soup should be. My Stilton Mushrooms were served in a small dish with a side salad on the plate. The Stilton which was poured over the mushrooms was deliciously creamy with a hint of Stilton, absolutely delicious!
Our piping hot main course arrived promptly after finishing our starters. The food was well presented and garnished with herbs. Vegetables came in a separate side dish and included mange tout, carrots & swede and boiled potatoes. I had a taste of everything that was served. The chicken was stuffed with sage and cranberries and the meat was succulent, melting in the mouth and the gravy was very tasty too. We had also ordered a side dish of fat chips which I didn’t think I would have been able to eat but when I tasted one I went ahead ate my fair share, they were home made chunky chips and very moreish.
As we dined we were relaxed and comfortable, soothing music played in the background and added to the pleasant atmosphere. We were asked if we were enjoying our meal and the service was fantastic. There was no way I was having a dessert until we were given the dessert menu… well how could I resist a choice of Belgian Chocolate mousse, Chocolate Pudding, Cappuccino Trifle, Date & Orange Pudding with Toffee Sauce and more?
Again the desserts were presented decoratively, garnished with a strawberry, chocolate sauce and a sprig of mint. My friend ordered the Chocolate Pudding with Custard, which was very chocolaty and a must for chocolate lovers! I was presented with a tall glass filled with sponge soaked in Amaretto liqueur, cappuccino mouse, cream and crushed Amaretto biscuits which was an absolute dream. By this time I thought I had room for no more but I managed a cup of freshly ground coffee, unfortunately I couldn’t possibly eat the biscuit that came with it!
All in all dining at JJs was fabulous and one of the few restaurants around to cook real home cooked freshly prepared English food, and when it is home cooked, you can really tell the difference, tasty succulent meat, delicious vegetables and those home cooked chips…fantastic! At JJs restaurant you are made to feel relaxed, welcome and are served with food to tantalise your taste buds.
JJs is open Wednesday to Saturday from 6pm and Wednesday to Friday 12 till 2pm for lunch. They serve a 3 for 2 mid week special on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6pm (3 courses for price of two).
