Tottington is part of Bury and is situated between Ramsbottom, Bury and Bolton. Areas close to Tottington are; Affetside, Greenmount, Hawkshaw and Walshaw. The name Tottington was originally Totinon in (1212) a name which was derived from Old English meaning "land or farmstead belonging to a man called Tota” (Tota’s village)
The railway in the village was one of the first in the world to carry electrified trains; today however, it is obsolete. Whitehead Gardens, named so because of the contributions from the Whitehead family, now stands on the place where a WW2 bomb hit on Christmas Eve in 1944.
Greenmount is situated next to Tottington and is also part of the Bury district. Its name comes from ‘Nailor’s Green’ which in Old English translates as ‘green field of a man called Naegl’. Up until 2004 the public house, The Nailor’s Green, stood at the junction of Brandlesholme Rd and Vernon Rd, it has since been replaced by flats.
